¿QUÉ ES EL EFECTO INVERNADERO?

  Fuente: www.erenovable.com

  • No malgastes luz

¿WHAT IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

Before entering the subject, it is convenient to start with the basics: what is the greenhouse effect? Basically, it is the natural phenomenon that allows an average temperature of the planet compatible with life. The name comes from the effect that occurs in greenhouses, where plants are grown under conditions that, outside of them, would be impossible.

The natural greenhouse effect of the Earth makes life possible as we know it. However, human activities, mainly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have intensified the natural phenomenon, causing global warming.

The greenhouse effect starts with the incidence of solar radiation on Earth. This short-wave energy stays at three points on the planet:
  • Absorbed by the atmosphere (ultraviolet rays)
  • Reflected in the clouds Direct
  • interference on the Earth's surface (light and heat that reaches us)

When the rays reach the Earth's surface, they are returned to the atmosphere in the form of long wave energy. In that journey, there are gases that absorb that energy, preventing it from jumping into outer space. These so-called greenhouse gases are what cause the temperature of the planet to be compatible with life.

If everything goes as it should, the average temperature on the planet's surface is 14º. If you do not have these greenhouse gases, the average would be -18º, making it impossible to live on Earth. Hence the relevance of maintaining this cycle with the least possible alteration. Something that, by the way, is not being achieved.

In fact, in recent decades, the proliferation of greenhouse gases has multiplied the energy retained in the atmosphere. This has caused the average temperature of 14º to increase gradually. This is how the fearsome climate change has arisen that is changing the course of the history of the planet, as never before.

CAUSES OF THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The causes of the greenhouse effect can be differentiated into two types: natural and artificial. Obviously, the two are simple to explain, so we will not lose too much time in them.

  • Causes of the greenhouse effect: natural
The natural causes of the greenhouse effect are those caused, directly, by the very action of nature. A nature that can expel into the atmosphere some harmful gases such as methane, oxidonitose or carbon dioxide. Also ozone or water vapor. In this case, volcanoes, earthquakes or ocean currents can have these consequences

  • Causes of the greenhouse effect: artificial
The artificial causes of the greenhouse effect are those caused by the human being. From deforestation to the massive exploitation of non-renewable resources such as coal or oil. Factories, electrical appliances or motor vehicles, contribute greatly to the emergence of the greenhouse effect.
Another worrisome element that multiplies the greenhouse effect is the disproportionate population growth. The more people, the more resources are needed, which means more industrial gases into the atmosphere, with dire consequences. All this causes that the gases do not go out into outer space and the temperature of the planet increases. The consequence is climate change, which is already a worrying reality.

HOW DOES THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT AFFECT CLIMATE CHANGE?

Asking how the greenhouse effect affects climate change is asking what will happen to the Earth in the future. And is that the consequences of the greenhouse effect on the planet are real and palpable. How does the greenhouse effect affect climate change

Temperature changes - Changes in temperature are becoming more and more impactful all over the world. It is hot in November, cold in June and torrential rains are common.

Extinction - Every year, some 30,000 species are killed between plants and animals.

Sea level - During the 20th century, sea level has risen 15 centimeters.

Glaciers - The melting of the glaciers causes sea level rise. The problem is that, after the summer, the glaciers do not recover the thickness of the ice of yesteryear. The delay of the winter and the scarcity of snow are at fault.

Dangerous climate - Natural and climatic disasters are becoming more common all over the world. Earthquakes, hurricanes, monsoons or droughts are the daily life of many countries.

Potability of water - Experts have already warned of a possible loss of water potability in many parts of the planet. If fulfilled, the disaster, at all levels, would be resounding.

To try to minimize the damage, many Administrations seek solutions against the greenhouse effect.

SOLUTIONS AGAINST THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The solutions against the greenhouse effect go through the action of the Governments, but also by the personnel. Each granite of sand contributed by one person is another granite for solutions against the greenhouse effect.
  • Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Use of efficient technologies.
  • Renewable energy conservation.
  • Savings of natural resources such as water, gas or electricity.
  • Recycling at all levels : from home to the most powerful industries worldwide.
  • Power the use of recycled materials.
  • Limit and prohibit the use of combustion vehicles.
  • Prohibit deforestation and enhance reforestation worldwide. Limit the use of paper and wood.
In the case of each citizen, these are some examples of solutions against the greenhouse effect.
  • Recycle all the garbage that you generate at home.
  • Use the shower instead of the bathroom.
  • Do not waste light.
  • Use public transport. If this is not possible, use a low-emission car or an electric car.
  • Put the heating between 18º and 21º. Each degree of more, you suppose an increase of 7% in the invoice.
  • If you are going to ventilate, open the window 10 minutes and close, so that the heat of the house does not escape.
  • Change your light bulbs for low consumption ones. They are more efficient, longer lasting and will save you much more money than you will pay more for them.
  • Do not leave appliances on standby. Half of the energy consumed by a television is in standby mode.
  • Buy efficient appliances.
  • Do not leave the phone charging all night.
